Arrested Development

Posted in Uncategorized by fieldmarshal on May 26, 2010

Have not actively followed any American drama or sitcoms since Friends ended almost a decade ago. It doesn’t help that the virtually endless supply of Korean dramas had the attention of my eyebas for the last 5 years or so.

Recently, I rediscovered the joy of watching US sitcoms again. Have been watching, and enjoying immensely, Arrested Development, an US. sitcom on a dysfunctional family. Sibling rivalry, parental neglect, forbidden cousinly love, and a do-gooder trying to hold the ‘Bluth family’ together are the ingredients which make this drama such a lol ‘must watch’ type of show.

With all the weird spins and development, I really can’t wait to see how it all ends in season 1.

Gone App Crazy

Posted in Mobile Blogging, Musings by fieldmarshal on May 26, 2010

I am mentally prepared for a shock when my handphone bill for this month arrives in the coming days. Having signed up for the lightest, thus cheapest, data plan, with the noble thought of rarely using the mobile surfing function of my phone, I am now regretting this blunder.

Since the day I downloaded the apps for BBC (the news nut that I am), WordPress and various mindless, but highly addictive games, I have been online enough to know that I busted the 35mb data I am given. The cheapo in me are now cussing the stupidity of the decision on the fateful day I got my phone.

Anyway, there’s little point in crying over spilt milk.

Currently, my wife and I are in opposing Android and Apple camps since she’s using the Ipod while I use the Android platform on my HTC Hero.

From what I observe, Apple apps are flashier and stylis compared to the ‘workhorse’ feel of my Android apps. However, I am firmly in Google’s camp as Apple, despite its seemingly good products, are going down the route of the ‘evil corporate empire’ with its attempt to control the development of apps and making us pay for something as basic as their firmware.

If any Android app developer is reading this, do know that Android users, like myself, think you guys are doing a great job. Keep it up!

Possessions

Posted in Musings, Shopping by fieldmarshal on May 25, 2010

My need for physical possessions seem to be inversely proportionate to my age.

I remember a time, some 10 odd years earlier, when my appetite for worldly possessions seem insatiable. Stuff like branded shirts, shoes, watches, electronic gadgets, books, toys, etc. are called out to me like the sirens’ song to doomed sailors.

Perhaps I have already owned, or reached a particular critical mass of owning stuff, but the urge to spend on things, and to be the ‘proud’ owner, no longer strikes a chord in me.

Advertisements are practically wasted on me since I will just zone out whenever they interrupt good programmes at the darndest point.

That said, I still have a soft spot for certain gadgets such as camera equipment and electronic gear, say Kindle.

Perhaps I have just ‘graduated’ from expensive stuff that costs less per unit, to things that burns a hole I’m my wallet everytime I buy one of them.

I’d like to think otherwise. But that’s really some food for thought.

Mobile blogging

Posted in Uncategorized by fieldmarshal on May 24, 2010

Guess I am a late entry into the field of mobile blogging since Tweeter has been in vogue for some time. Personally, I think micro blog platforms such as Tweeter is a domain reserved for people who can survive without the constant need for attention.

For me, I blog on the go during my long commute to work. Three hours on public transport, packed like a sardine in a can, is best spent doing something than enjoying the stale air or BO circulating in our poorly ventilated MRT system.

Another reason for this newfound blogging drive is the installation of thus WordPress app on my HTC Hero. In itself, this has unshackled me to the tether of my home pc. A good thing, considering that I spend the whole day staring at a monitor while at work.

Time for me to alight and board another train. Ah, the drudgery of a ‘salaryman’.

Finally, I actually work for a living

Posted in Musings by fieldmarshal on May 22, 2010

It feels good to once again log into to this blog and pen/or type my thoughts.  For all I know, I am the only person aware of its existance, but its like an old friend that’s always there for me when I need an alternative outlet to share my thoughts and reflections.

Life has been pretty good the last 3 months. Good in the sense that I am totally engaged in my new work. No doubt my work takes me away from stuff  like blogging and ‘FBing’, but professionally, I feel more alive than any other time in my the 10 years that I have worked. The long walks with my wife every evening, before I started work at my new place, is perhaps the one thing I miss most. Guess I have to make it up by finding the time, which is so hard to these days, to spend with her in the evenings or the weekends.

Come to think of it, life revolved pretty much around work in the last few weeks. Seeing the sun after work is a luxury now. Dinner is a lonesome affair, although my wife makes the effort to sit in with me as I gulp down mouthfuls of food that have been set aside for me. In some inexplicable way, the lack of family dining has made dining with the family an event which I look forward to during the weekends. There’s definitely some truism to the saying “Absence does make the heart grow fonder”.

Time for me to catch up on some of the familial action.
